The storyline is that the Orks recently discovered the facility. The facility still has a small group of Mechanicus personnel and is self-sufficient. When the planet fell over 20 years prior, there was no time to evacuate all of the technology stored in the facility, so the Mechanicus remained there. The facility had always been a secret and was well hidden. But the Orks stumbled across it. One of their Mekaniaks realized what had been found and the Orks attempted to enter. Suffering huge losses, they were able to penetrate the facilities outer defenses, made up of automated gun platforms. In doing so, they cut off several Mechanicus Adepts who were trying to keep the guns operational. In the Adepts possession was a machine spirit possessing the shut down codes for the facilities second defensive ring. These adepts escaped into the Dead Plains using gravbikes. Unbeknownst to the Orks and Humans, Magnus the Red had foreseen this turn of events in his auguries and sent out a Chaos army, the Phoenix Horde, to take control of the Mechanicus Complex. The Horde, in orbit around the planet, intercepted the transmissions of the fleeing Adepts. The Horde's Chaos Lord, Varlan, sent Chaos Fighters to kill the Adepts. Accompanied by the Sorcerer Erdaquan and a Chaos expeditionary force, Lord Varlan descended to the Dead Plains to claim the machine spirit. In the meantime, the Orks had closed on the site. And so, the two forces raced to find the location of the dead Adept bearing the machine spirit. A squad of Tzeentch Flamer demons found the Adept and the machine spirit along a dried out riverbed. Before they could retreat with their prize, an Ork dreadnought engaged them. The dreadnought destroyed over half of the Flamers and looked to be on the verge of victory when it was destroyed by the dark magic of Sorcerer Erdaquan. But, the dreadnought had held up the Flamers long enough for a unit of Orks to engage them. At the same time, a unit of Possessed Chaos Marines bounded across the dead river and slammed into the combat. In the ensuing chaos, the machine spirit was destroyed. |
